Umphrey’s McGee and G. Love celebrated the 4th of July at Moonlite Gardens in Cincinnati’s Coney Island. G. Love started the evening out around 8pm and delivered an energy infused set. The sweltering heat couldn’t hold back the sold out crowd from voicing their pleasure of G. Love’s signature sound. He finished his set around 9pm. Umphrey’s McGee is no stranger to Cincinnati. Having played the area for many years over their rise to where they are today, the band has made many friends in the area. As a result, fans heard rumblings before the show that they could expect a surprise of sorts. As the band took the stage around 9:30m, the hot and sweaty crowd launched into a huge roar. As the first set progressed, the band looked to the second level balcony of the 87 year old Moonlite Gardens, and who appeared? None other than Mad Dog and his Filthy Larger Secret. A horns section composed of members of local favorites, The Cincy Brass, was Mad Dog’s secret. A band “Duel” of sorts would commence. As the Cincy Brass played a song, the members of UM would battle back with a song of their own. This battle continued for a solid 15 minutes with a insanely happy and loud reaction from the sold out crowd. After the battle ended, the band took a set break. Umphrey’s returned to the stage 20 minutes later to begin their second set. As the second set got into rhythm, Jeff Waful (Umphrey’s Ligthing Director) took advantage of the natural wooded backdrop and delighted the crowd with a visual display that was awe-inspiring. The band continued well into the night and early morning. Half way through the second set, the band invited out G. Love to play a version of Snoop Dog’s Gin & Juice. As the show started to wrap up, Mad Dog was invited out with three additional members from The Cincy Brass. As the band played David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”, that is exactly what the crowd did. The entire venue broke out in dance. The band wrapped up their show around 1am. The Noble Visions offers our readers with a look into the 4th of July Umphrey’s McGee and G.
