GUEST reunited in the spring of 2010 and have played a few shows together since then.  However, GUEST fans couldn’t have anticipated what the band would announce next.  The members of GUEST are resurrecting their annual holiday shows aptly titled GUESTivus.

You are invited to GUEST’s Holiday show GUESTivus 2010. We are very excited to have this show back in Cincinnati where it formed at Play by Play on December 18th. In addition to GUEST’s performance you will be treated to the debut performance from the newly formed band The Drop, featuring John Garrett on Drums, Drew Santer on Guitar, Mark Montrella on Bass and Steve Buttree (formerly of the band Halias) on Sax and Keys. This band is not to be missed. GUEST will also be inviting other known musicians* to join in the night’s festivities. Among them will be John “The Demon” Gentry on Guitar.

The Return of GUEST commissioned rock art

GUEST, based out of Columbus Ohio, hasn’t played together in well over five years.  That long drought comes to an end next weekend in Columbus as the members of GUEST take the stage for a reunion show.  Noble Visions Design and Photography and Joshua Timmermans were contacted about designing the promo poster for the event, as well as a show print to be sold to fans at the show.  The promo poster featured a swarm of flying mechanized creatures representing the “Return of GUEST”.  This poster presented today is the event poster and depicts GUEST upon their return.  The design was created over a 4 day sitting and required quite a few steps to reach the final product.  The first step in creating this print was to come up with an idea that would tie into the promo poster that had already been completed.  The idea of the octopus and robot seemed to fit the feel and playing style of GUEST.  Once the idea was firm, the initial step is to create a rough outline as depicted in the first image of the creation process.  Once the rough outline was created we went back in a finalized the pencil sketch of the design as seen in the second photograph.  After the pencil sketch was completed, the process of inking the outline of the design started as seen in photograph three.  The inking process is a time-consuming and tedious stage in the process and once the outline was finished (photograph four), we could start to go into the detail work.  The inking took about 5 hours to complete……and at the halfway spot you could see the design taking shape as seen in photograph five.  The process of inking the design was completed as seen in photograph six.  Once the inking was done, a high-resolution scan of the image is done and then imported into Adobe Illustrator.  The process of color the design is as much fun as it is frustrating.  After many hours of color changes and schemes, different shadings, and font tweaks, the design was nearly complete.  The last stage of the design was to introduce the flying creature that was featured in the promo poster for the show.  Once we strategically placed a few flying creatures, the poster was complete.

The prints will be available the day of the show in Columbus.  The amount that will be printed has yet to be determined.  The poster will be printed on 11 x 17 archival poster stock.  Each print will be hand signed and numbered by the artist Joshua Timmermans.

The Return of GUEST promo poster

Noble Visions Design and Photography was recently contacted by our friends and members of the band GUEST in Columbus, Ohio to create a pre-show event poster for their upcoming “The Return of GUEST” show taking place May 22, 2010.  Known for their progressive playing style, the artwork for this print was intended to match the bands  intensity and stage presence.  The print was also a vehicle to send the message that the original members of GUEST will be taking the stage together once again to perform their unmatched style of progressive music.  The design for the print was created completely in Illustrator.  The bug design was created over a 15 hour sitting using wacom graphics tablet and the illustrator software.  Each line of the bug is a unique aspect of the design and can be tweaked and manipulated.  Each small detail in this robotic flying creature was created based on the area of the structure to give the realistic working mechanical feel to the bug.  Once the wire frame of the bug was designed, the translucent aspects of the creature were applied to the wings.   Once the bug was completely designed, the creative flow of the poster was conceptualized.  The idea of a mechanized swarm of creatures to represent “The Return of GUEST” fit perfectly based on the style of this diverse band.  We laid out the idea with multiple copies of the original bug to create the look and feel of a swarm.  Once we created the swarm, we took a large version of the bug to be the forefront of the poster.  We added the text and thought it would be interesting if a couple of the bugs could hang on the “The Return of GUEST” headline.  We placed the bugs on the GUEST logo (The logo is from a 2001 GUEST design we created) as if they are hanging out.  Once the information was placed on the print, we made some small changes and wrapped it up.  The poster will be going up in bars and venues in the Columbus Ohio are starting this weekend.  Information about the show can be seen below, as well as the initial bug design.

Obey Eye & Nubian Mural. Located at High Street Design Studio & Store at 1401 Reading Road.

The Noble Visions was able to find some good weather to get out and capture the two Shepard Fairey murals at High Street Design Studio in Cincinnati.  In our two previous articles featuring the HDR photographs of Shepard Fairey murals in Cincinnati, we were able to look at five of the nine murals. (Article 1/Article 2)  The Obey Eye and Nubian Murals are located at 1401 Reading Road at High Street Design Studio & Store.  These HDR images are part of a larger series of HDR photographs that will be part of Noble Visions Design and Photography’s project titled “Cincinnati in HDR”.   The final two murals are located on the roof of Shake It Records in Northside, and the billboard above High Street Design Studio.  The Noble Visions plans on offering a close up look of these two murals pending authorized access.  Shepard plans to return to the Greater Cincinnati area in May to continue his bombing of pre-approved sites.  We plan to continue this Shepard Fairey aspect of “Cincinnati in HDR” once the next wave of murals begin to appear.

"Aung San Suu" and "Peace Fingers" outside Northside business Shop Therapy

This is a follow-up to our article Shepard Fairey ~ A HDR Photographic look at the four initial murals in Cincinnati.  We had the opportunity to get out and capture another Shepard Fairey mural in HDR.  This piece is located in the Northside neighborhood.  ”Aung San Suu” and “Peace Fingers” is what is displayed on the side of Northside business Shop Therapy. Aung San Suu Kyi is Burma’s democracy leader and winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize.  This series of pictures is part of an ongoing High Dynamic Range photography project Noble Visions Design and Photography is working on.  Tentatively titled “Cincinnati in HDR”, the HDR photographs of Shepard’s murals play a role in the beginning stages of the project.

This is a follow-up to our initial article on the new Shepard Fairey exhibit that begins at the Contemporary Arts Center Friday February 19, 2010.  (Link to Part I).  The exhibit titled “Supply & Demand: 20 year Retrospective” is set to kick off tomorrow with Shepard DJ’ing during the opening.  The event begins at 7pm for current CAC members, and will be open to the public at 8pm.  In addition, Shepard has created a limited edition print for the CAC exhibit.  450 were printed and the will be available on a first come, first serve basis.  A limit of 2 prints will be sold to each person.  One of the unique features of this exhibit is Shepard has secured permission to bomb tag different locations with his murals throughout the Greater Cincinnati Area.  We were able to get out today and capture these murals on film.  This is the beginning of a new project Noble Visions Design and Photography is working on.  This project tentatively titled “Cincinnati in HDR” will showcase various locations throughout Cincinnati in High Dynamic Range photographs.  The images of Shepard’s murals is the first installment of this project.  We will be following up this article with full coverage of Shepard Fairey’s opening tomorrow at CAC.  We will be offering a look into the “Cincinnati in HDR” project as it progresses.
