The band took a short break and returned for a full second set with a cover of David Gilmore’s There’s No Way Out of Here.  A first for the band.  The rest of the second set was full of pure Gov’t Mule magic.  Raven Black Night > Gold Dust Woman, I’m A Ram with Black Dog Tease, Ballerina > Kind Of Mule Jam > Drums > Wandering Child, Lay Your Burden Down > Smokestack Lightning > Lay Your Burden Down, Slackjaw Jezebel.  The band would then come back to the stage for a unique encore with members of the Revivalists performing a rousing version of I Shall Be Released.

Widespread Panic fans would then fill The Palace Theater around 7pm.  The line outside the front of each venue has been long every night of this tour. Fans were desperately trying to get their hands on one of the coveted Chuck Sperry spring tour posters.  Each night the individual show’s allotment have sold out quickly.  The show on Wednesday would be no different, with everyone rushing in to grab one of the prints.

Everyone found their way to their seats and the band took the stage for their second show at the Palace around 7:59pm.  The show started off with a resounding version of Pigeons.  As we stated in our coverage of Tuesday night’s show, it is nice to hear the band members have come back from their break adding new dimensions and approaches to some of their staple songs.  That fresh perspective on the tried and true songs is a welcome bonus for fans this spring tour.  A blustery Tail Dragger would rear its head next, followed by an unbeatable segue of Shut up and Drive > Stop – Go > Cream Puff War.  If that wasn’t enough for a start, the rest of the set would be just as thrilling.  1 x1 was next with Trouble being played thereafter.  The rest of the set featured Cotton Was King, and then a rousing version of Surprise Valley into Junior.

The second set started off with as much energy as the first ended with.  The band began with Little Kin followed by Proving Ground.  Next the Panic welcomed up Danny Hutchens & Eric Carter from Bloodkin.  The fans were treated to Wet Trombone Blues followed by Success Yourself.  Wet Trombone Blues was the first song that Bloodkin ever wrote, and it was special to see them play it on stage with their friends at The Palace.  The last time that Widespread Panic performed Wet Trombone Blues was on 1/24/94.  That’s a span of 1639 shows since fans have been able to see the band perform the song.  Not only that, the last instance of the band performing Success Yourself was back on 4/2/00.  A 932 show absence. Needless to say, fans were extremely thrilled to witness these musicians back on stage together performing these songs.

Once Bloodkin left the stage, the show took off with C. Brown.  The concert then went into overdrive with a monstrous Tie Your Shoes > Driving Song > Diner > Driving Song > Breathing Slow > Chainsaw City.

The encores this spring tour have been nothing short of amazing. The last night of Louisville was another example, with three songs being performed.  May Your Glass Be Filled was first followed by the Talking Heads Heaven.  Then in a big surprise, the band decided to end the two night run with the fan favorite Tall Boy.  Wow is what I heard from fans all around me at this point in the night.  Fans were delighted and the band once again burned down the house!

Set I: Wet Trombone Blues, Quarter Tank of Gasoline, Success Yourself, End of The Show

Widespread Panic took the stage at 8pm and as they did, it was apparent that the show would be one to remember.  Any fan of Widespread Panic knows, when frontman John Bell takes the stage with his baseball cap on backwards, you’re in for a memorable night of music.  The band started the night off with Papa Legba.  It is quite clear that after having a year off from playing together, each band member is bringing some new changes and ideas to the table. Each song this night featured small twists and takes on previous live versions.  After Papa Legba, the band would then take on All Time Low followed by the JJ Cale cover, Travelin Light.  Next a nasty version of Barstools and Dreamers would surface.  Once Barstools wrapped up the band would then played Party at Your Mama’s House into Ribs & Whiskey.  The second half of the first set featured, Flicker into I’m Not Alone.  The band finished off the first set with Weight of The World followed by a dirty version of Bill Wither’s Use Me.

The second set kicked off at 9:49 and started with Better Off.  One Arm Steve would follow Better Off.  This is where the second set would take off in a fury.  Aunt Avis > Greta > Guilded Splinters > Big Wolly Mammoth > Christmas Katie > Let It Rock > Fishwater.  Each of these songs were played with intensity from each band member.  But what was so noticeable was the band’s interaction with one another, and how they added new elements and jams to each song.

The night ended with Ain’t No Use into Can’t Find My Way Home.

The second set the band put engine in overdrive and lit the house on fire.  Love Tractor emerged and fired its engines, as the crowd warmed up for the rest of the unforgettable second set.  Who Do you Belong To would follow Love Tractor.  The band then busted out Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.  What a treat for the fans to hear this seldom played song.  Action Man would come in a fury next.  Once Action Man came to a close the band played Jack next.  The rest of the show from here on out was a roller coaster of a ride.  After looking at the second half of this second set, there isn’t much to be said but….WOW!  Stop – Go, Surprise Valley, Pilgrims, Chilly Water would round out the set.  Just an incredible end to the set!  They wouldn’t stop there though.  For the encore the band would choose the Panic original Blue Indian.  However they also chose to perform a couple covers that every music fan respects.  The Band’s Ophelia and The Shape I’m In capped off the two night run.  And what a run it was!  As the house music started to come on, you could here Talking Heads Burning Down the House coming on.  The fans kept the dancing rolling, and would get down for the duration of the song.  What and incredible amount of energy in that arena!  Enjoy the photos!
