The Centerville Elks soccer program is steeped in tradition, and the members of the 2010 team added a mark in the history books on Friday night at Columbus Crew Stadium. The Ohio High School Division I state soccer finals took place on Friday between the Centerville Elks and the #1 nationally ranked St Ignatius Wildcats. The Centerville Elks have not won a state title since the Gary Avedikian coached team of 1984. However, the Centerville Elks hold the record in the state of Ohio for the most number of appearances in the state finals with 13. Coach Brad Loveless, the 4th coach in Elks history, brought his 22-0-2 Elks to Columbus on Friday night to try to add to the extensive and impressive accolades of previous teams.

Centerville Ohio has always been known as a hotbed in the development of talented soccer players. From the inception of the Centerville Soccer program by Gary Avedikian in 1973, to the current player turned coach in Brad Loveless, there has always been a desire by all involved to stand above the rest. It is this culture of the Centerville program that drives its players and coaches to play and perform at a superior level. This dedication to being known as the premier high school soccer program in Division I, is a result of the hard work and commitment to excellence and elevated standards instilled by Coach Gary Avedikian during the inception of the program. Coach Avedikian retired from coaching soccer years ago, yet his high standards, commitment to excellence, and ethical gamesmanship continues to permeate the program .

The 2010 Centerville soccer team is a direct reflection of the past coaches and players approach to excellence. This year’s team went the entire season without suffering a loss. Having an unbeaten record, after facing the high-caliber quality teams that tested them through out the year, is a remarkable feat. The men held their opponents to 7 goals throughout the entire fall season. They brought their talents to the Columbus Crew stadium with the intention of taking down the #1 ranked St Ignatius. Coupled with the fact the St Ignatius team has two players that play on the National Soccer Team, the Elks knew that they had their work cut out for them.

The first half was a very closely contested battle. Both teams came out playing very aggressively and each had varied opportunities to score throughout the first 45 minutes. The Elks used the right side of the field quite a bit to put pressure on the St Ignatius defense. St Ignatius’s goalkeeper was tested in the air quite a bit and looked as if he would be able to handle the pressure the Elks were putting on him. The Elks would play tough defense, as they had all year. The Elks goalkeeper Andrek Kreger didn’t see much of the ball throughout the year, but that would change quickly towards the middle of the first half. The Wildcats pushed the ball down the right side of the field quite often, and in doing so, the Elks defense would over compensate to help defend. As a result, the Elks would occasionally leave the opposite side of the field wide open. St Ignatius seemed to see this fault and used it to their benefit. In anticipation of the weak side defensive collapse, and a quick change of field with the ball, the Wildcats were able to catch the Elks of guard. St Ignatius managed to get off four decent shots that would test Kreger’s skills. As the teams went into halftime tied at 0-0, it was apparent that changes in the defensive communication would need to addressed.

The second half started off almost identical to the previous 45 minutes. Both teams came out aggressive but poised. The Elks would drive down and move the ball nicely on the right side of the field, making the Wildcats scurry to find defensive answers. Putting pressure on the right side of the field would test the St Ignatius defense. The Wildcats started to play a bit scrappy and were giving up throw-in after throw-in, deep in their own territory. This resulted in many set pieces for the Elks to try to knock one in the back of the net. After many attempts to get a shot off, the Wildcats gained their composure and mounted a fierce counter attack. The ball moved down the left side of the field testing the right mid fielder and right back of the Elks defense. When the pressure was being thrown upon the Elks defense, the weak side collapse that was evident in the first half reared its ugly head. Right when you could see the collapse developing, the Wildcats switched the field of play with the ball. As a result, this left St Ignatius’s star player wide open for a direct shot on goal. The ball would fly by Kreger, and this brief mental breakdown in the Elks defense would be the only thing St Ignatius would need to open the flood gates. Over the next 10 minutes the Wildcats would score three more goals, making it a 4-0 game. As time started to run out on the Elk’s hopes of a second state title in school history, the coaches from both teams started to rotate in players that had yet to make it into the game. As each player got their opportunity to take the field at a State Final, the Elks would put on a bit of pressure that the Wildcats couldn’t contain. The Elks would score with 4:45 left in the game, making sure St Ignatius wouldn’t go home with a shut out. The Elks battled hard and fought a great fight against what many call, “The best high school team in the country”. The Elks fell sort of their ultimate goal this time, but the 2010 team won in the hearts of the families, fans, former coaches and players that love and support the best soccer program in Ohio.

The history, tradition and culture of a premier soccer program is alive and well at Centerville High School. The men of the 2010 Elks Soccer team can hold their heads high knowing they are worthy members of the Centerville soccer family and have made their mark in the history of this storied program. Congratulations to the 2010 Elks Soccer program as Ohio Division I State Runner-up.

As the Cincinnati Reds enter Major League Baseball’s post-season for the first time since 1995, the citizens of this river town are embracing and enjoying every last-minute of the ride. The fans excitement and elation was quite apparent on Monday afternoon, as swarms of people flocked to Fountain Square. A massive rally of Reds fans, cheering and showing support for professional baseball’s oldest team, invaded the square before the team hopped a flight to Philadelphia. The Phillies will host the Reds for the first two games of the NLDS starting Wednesday night. The entire 2010 Cincinnati Red’s team took the stage around 3:30 during the 2-6pm rally. The team was escorted to the stage by a member of the Big Red Machine. Joe Morgan walked on to the platform with the team and was accompanied by Walt Jocketty, and Bob Castellini. Marty Brennaman hosted the event and took time to speak with Jay Bruce, Brandon Phillips, Jonny Gomes and Bronson Arroyo. At one point, Dusty Baker was introduced and he made sure that Joey Votto didn’t get out of there without saying a few words. We offer a look into the rally.

The Men’s ATP Master’s Series wrapped up play in Cincinnati at the Western & Southern Financial Tournament on Sunday. Roger Federer won his fourth title at the Western & Southern Financial Tournament. The Western & Southern Financial Men’s ATP Master’s Series is held every year at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. This tournament has grown each and every year since it’s inception in 1898. Originally called the Cincinnati Open, this tournament is the oldest tennis tournament in the United States to be played in its original city. This year’s tournament also featured a new 52,000 square foot media and players building. In addition the tournament announced plans for an additional 40% expansion.

The Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio will be expanded by 5.4 acres to include six new courts, and a new ticket office and entry plaza, officials of Tennis for Charity and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced today.

The Tennis Center is the host of the annual Western & Southern Masters and Women’s Open, the largest professional summer tennis tournament in the nation outside of the US Open. The grounds are located approximately 20 miles north of Cincinnati.

Crews will break ground immediately following the men’s finals, to be held August 22, 2010.

Among the improvements in this phase, planned to be completed by the first day of next year’s combined event, which kicks off August 13, 2011:

· Six new courts
o One court with a seating capacity of 4,000 that will serve as a third television court for the 2011 combined event
o One court with a capacity of 2,500
o Four additional courts

· A 2,750-square-foot enclosed ticket office

· A 10,000-square-foot entry plaza with a 30-foot by 60-foot canopy and 9 gates

The new footprint of the Tennis Center will span 19.0 acres, up from 13.6 acres in 2010. The expansion will stretch to the North and East of the current grounds.

“With the tournament planning to host the men and women simultaneously in 2011, this expansion is necessary to accommodate the increase in tennis and attendance expected at the combined event,” said Ken Berry, president of Tennis for Charity. Tennis for Charity owns the land and leases the facility to the tournament.

The expansion plans will be designed by Browning, Day, Mullins & Dierdorf in Indianapolis, and the construction will be completed by Vector Construction of Northern Kentucky. Both organizations have been involved with the Lindner Family Tennis Center for more than 20 years. “The goal of the Master Plan is to create a festive urban tennis garden that generates excitement and action throughout the grounds,” said executive vice president, Greg Jacoby.

This year’s tournament marked the opening of the newly constructed player and media facility built into the West side of the 11,400 capacity Center Court. Also today it was announced, the 52,000-square-foot structure will officially be named the “Paul Flory Player Center,” in honor of the tournament chairman, Paul Flory. Flory joined the event in 1975 as tournament director and guided the event from a small tournament held at Coney Island to one of the largest in the world.

“Paul truly is a ‘players’ tournament director, and it is only fitting this world-class facility now bears his name,” said USTA President and Chairman of the Board, Lucy Garvin. “This building will forever honor the man who laid the foundation for this tournament’s great success.”

Maria Sharapova came into the final on Sunday looking strong as she cruised through the opening rounds of her first appearance at the Western & Southern Financials Women’s Open Tournament. However, at the end of the day the story would shift to the reigning U.S Open Champion, Kim Clijsters. Maria Sharapova had won the first set 2-6 and was on match point 3-5 late in the second when a bad storm would force an hour and a half delay. It was obvious that after the break, Kim would take full advantage of the bit of rest. Clijsters would rally to win the second set 7-5. After the aggressive play by Clijsters, Sharapova went to the sideline and requested a trainer to inspect her left heel. The trainer wrapped Sharapova’s foot and she would never be the same from that point forward. Kim Clijsters would go on to win 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2. This is Clijsters second appearance at the Western & Southern Financial Women’s Open Tournament. She made her first appearance back from retirement at last years tournament. “To me, obviously being my first tournament back last year, it was already special,” Clijsters said. “To be back where we started last year is great. To win it this year means a lot.”

Maria Sharapova and fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova played their opening match Tuesday night on the second day of the Western & Southern Women’s Open tennis tournament. The newly remodeled players and media facility was welcomed by both athletes, but the sweltering and muggy Cincinnati heat was less to be desired. As the sun started to set around 7pm, Sharapova and Kuznetsova took center court at the Linder Family Tennis Center with the heat index in the high 80′s. Sharapova would come into the match well rested and ready to take on the Ohio heat. Unlike her opponent Kusnetsova, who had just gotten off a cross-country flight the day before. Having just come off her win in Sunday’s final of the Mercury Insurance Open in San Diego, Kutznetsova would have problems most of the match.

Sharapova was able to capitalize on Kuznetsova’s slow and sluggish 0-5 start. Wearing her opponent down in the oppressive heat, Sharapova battled Kuznetsova for three sets winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Kutznetsova played the entire match with a sore left leg and did her best to bounce back from the previous weekends tournament. There is a tournament rule that allows players to take a ten minute break between the second and third set when the temperatures rise above 82 degrees. Each player tried the make the most of this short break, and Sharapova obviously benefited most. Coming out of the break Sharpova would later say “”I definitely felt fresher after I came back from that”. After going up 3-0, she would go on to win the set 6-2. Tenth-seeded Sharapova advances to play Andrea Petkovic today at 2 p.m.
